Letter to your future self

The simplest time machine ever invented.

A letter to your future self is the simplest time machine ever invented. You write down what you're feeling, hoping, fearing — and seal it for delivery on a date you choose. Months. Years. A decade or more. When it lands in your inbox, the version of you who reads it will know things you don't know yet, but they'll also remember things you've forgotten. The letter is the only bridge between the two.

People write these letters for different reasons. To capture a moment that feels too important to lose. To make a promise to themselves that they want to be reminded of. To tell their future self what they're proud of, what they're afraid of, what they want to keep working toward. Some write at the start of something — a new job, a new city, a new relationship. Others write at the end of something, to mark the close of a chapter.

There's no template here, and you don't need to be a writer. The best letters are the ones that sound exactly like you. A few sentences is enough. Write what you'd want to read on a hard day, or a happy one, or just an ordinary Tuesday years from now.

TimeCapsule keeps your letter encrypted until the day you chose. Only you can read it. We don't analyse it, store it in plaintext, or share it with anyone. It just waits.

How it works

Three steps. No account.

Simple by design. Built so anyone can use it without signing up.

  1. 01

    Write your letter

Tell your future self anything. A goal. A memory. A promise. Plain text only — no formatting, no attachments.

  2. 02

    Confirm your email

We send a one-time confirmation link. Click it within 7 days and your letter is scheduled.

  3. 03

    Receive it on the day

We'll be there on the day you chose. Encrypted in the meantime, and only you can read it.

Why this tool exists

Some letters are worth waiting for.

TimeCapsule is a free tool from the team at Vaulternal. We build software for messages that need to reach the right person at the right moment — sometimes years from now.

Most of our work is for messages to the people who matter to you. This tool is a simpler version of that idea, and it's just for you. No account, no fee, no catch.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is it really free?
Yes. No credit card, no account, no upsell. We're a venture-backed company building a separate paid product (Vaulternal). This tool is our gift to anyone who wants to write to their future self.
Will my letter actually arrive?
Your letter is safe with us. We're a venture-backed company with the infrastructure and runway to be here for the long haul. Your delivery date is locked in, your letter is encrypted at rest, and you'll always be able to cancel or download it from your manage link.
How is my letter protected?
Your letter is encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM with rotating keys. Your email address is also encrypted, and we only store a one-way hash for rate limiting. Plain-text content is never written to logs.
Can I edit or cancel?
You can edit your letter for 14 days after confirming. After that, you can still cancel any time before delivery — but the content is locked to keep the original intent.
Why do you ask me to confirm by email?
Confirmation prevents spam. If your inbox doesn't receive the link, the letter doesn't get scheduled. The email is purely functional — no marketing, no cross-promo.
Can I send to someone else?
Not in this tool. TimeCapsule delivers letters only to the email address you confirmed at writing time. If you want to send a future message to a loved one, that's exactly what Vaulternal (the paid product) does.
